Diogo Jota, a Liverpool attacker, has shared his thoughts on the Reds' impending Premier League match against Chelsea on Sunday. The Reds visit Stamford Bridge in a match that will be critical for both teams as they try to close the gap on Manchester City at the top of the table.
Liverpool is currently in third place in the Premier League, one point behind Chelsea and with a game in hand. The Reds are nine points behind Manchester City at the top of the standings, and a loss on Sunday could see them slide out of contention. Jota was asked ahead of the game if he thought the Reds will be able to beat Chelsea and cut the gap between themselves and Manchester City. According to Liverpool's official website, he said: "We recognise that there is a gap, but we also recognise that we are capable of closing it, and that is the plan. But we must avoid what happened against Leicester (the 1-0 loss on Tuesday), because if we continue to do what we did in that game, it would be difficult for us to win."Jota also conceded that if his team wants to win at Stamford Bridge, they will have to be at their best: "We're aware that Chelsea is on the road. We drew with them at home since we knew it won't be easy. We both want to bridge the distance, but we also know that at least one of us will fall further behind. We need to be at our best—I'm confident that if we do, we'll be able to win the game. We want to get off to a good start in the new year, and the only way to do so is to win at Stamford Bridge."Following the game against Chelsea, Liverpool will primarily rely on Jota.
With both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane ready to represent their country in the African Cup of Nations next month, it will be up to Jota to step up and score goals for Liverpool. The African Cup of Nations is set to begin on January 9, which means Salah and Mane will be playing their final game for Liverpool until the completion of the competition.
Since joining Liverpool in September 2020, Jota has been one of the club's most prolific goal scorers. He's been in excellent form recently, scoring seven goals in his past nine Liverpool outings. The forward is slated to lead the line against Chelsea on Sunday, and he will be hoping to keep up his good run. In the absence of Salah and Mane, however, the Portuguese star will be under greater pressure than ever to keep Liverpool in contention.
